Sisterhood

Welcome to Temple Beth Am Sisterhood!

The Sisterhood is an active and vital group of women who are professionals, stay at home moms, young women and grandmothers within the congregation who come together to enhance the lives of our members with programs that provide meaning, enjoyment and an opportunity to form new friendships!

We invite you to learn more about being part of our active community and will be offering a variety of programs and activities to meet our member needs for families, couples and Sisterhood members alike.

Upcoming Events:

Women's Shabbat will be on Saturday, January 20th. Please attend services with us as the women of Temple Beth Am take over all parts of the service.
There will be many service participation opportunities in Hebrew, English, and non-speaking roles. Be sure to be at synagogue for the start of services at 9:30 am.

The next read for Beth Am Books will be The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. Here is a description of the book:

In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighbourhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.

As these characters' stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town's white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community-heaven and earth-that sustain us.

Please start reading now; the discussion will be held in February. You can get the book from Amazon or the Broward County Library.

More Ways to Participate in Sisterhood:

  • It's time to pay your Sisterhood dues for 2023-2024.  Go to https://www.beth-am.org/form/sisterhood-membership-form.html or pay by check using the form in the synagogue membership renewal packet. Membership costs $36 per year and includes $13 for the Women's League. Dues for first-year synagogue members are free.
  • This year's Torah Fund pin highlights the word arevut, responsibility. It corresponds to the theme from the Babylonian Talmud, Shevuot 39a, that all the people of Israel are responsible for one another, and we assume that responsibility through our support of our seminaries. For a minimum donation of $180, you can be wearing the new Torah Fund pin. That being said, we will happily accept any donation amount.
  • Want to donate to the Little Free Pantry but can't make it there? You can order items on the temple's Little Free Pantry Amazon Wish List and they will be sent directly to the temple office.
  • Also, bring extra books for the Little Free Library located next to the pantry.
  • Wednesday Bingo still could use more help! Bingo is one of the largest fundraisers for Temple Beth Am. We especially need volunteers to sell Bingo cards from 9:30 to 11:15 and also volunteers to work in the money room throughout the day. If you can give a couple of hours once a month on Wednesdays during the day, we would be very appreciative!  Can't make it on Wednesdays? Monday Night Bingo needs help as well.
